Junior Youth Activities for the Lent and Easter Seasons
This book has everything a catechist needs to create fun and meaningful experiences throughout the season of Lent and Easter for young people in the fifth through eighth grade. Material for each week of Lent and Easter includes commentary for the catechist on the Sunday lectionary readings, a preparation section, a detailed supply list and a session plan outline. Each session includes a detailed activity based on the lectionary, followed by questions and suggestions for guiding an extended reflection period. The format works for general catechesis, youth ministry and the catechumenate. Appendix includes a theme index. Some materials may be photocopied.
Review
"These activities are not simply icebreakers but are integral to the message of the lesson. Through a multitude of well-crafted questions, the young people then reflect on the activity, its connection to the Scripture passage and life's meaning as lived by youth in our culture today. This book is guaranteed not to sit on your shelf, as its format is easily adapted to many different catechetical situations."
— Patricia Mueller, associate director, Office for Catechetics/Religious Education, Archdiocese of Detroit
Sharing the Lectionary for Lent 2003
Sharing the Lectionary for Lent 2003 is a small-group, six-week process that invites readers to revitalize their faith through prayer, reading, reflection, discussion and other faith-sharing techniques, using the first reading and the Gospel for each Sunday in Lent. By thinking through reflection questions and sharing personal experiences, readers apply the Gospel to their lives and gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. The process builds community by encouraging readers to explore the connections between their faith and their relationships. The book includes the Sunday readings for Lent, Cycle B, along with brief commentaries on each reading, making it effective and convenient for small groups to use. It also contains Cycle A readings for the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays, which makes it also suitable for use in the catechumenate.
What Every Catholic needs to Know about Lent, Triduum, and Easter
Many Catholics — long-time active parishioners as well as newcomers — do not have an up-to-date understanding of the paschal season. This little book can make a big difference. What Every Catholic Needs to Know about Lent, Triduum, and Easter walks the average Catholic through the history of the season, its various rituals, their role in the liturgy, and prayers and activities they can do with their own families at home. This is a great resource for liturgy committees, RCIA groups, adult study groups — even the entire congregation.

The Lent, Triduum, and Easter Answer Book
This resource helps catechists understand and teach the liturgy of the Lent, Triduum and Easter seasons. It sorts through the official documents and helps you appreciate the deeper meaning of the liturgy. In a question-and-answer format, it addresses the commonly misunderstood or confusing aspects of preparing and celebrating the liturgy of these seasons. It opens to the reader the spirit of the rites, as well as the genius of the tradition that produced them. From a better understanding of these seasons, the catechist can also better prepare for teaching about the entire liturgical year, since the 90 days are the “source and summit” of the whole year.
Review
“Fr. Paul Niemann has done a great service for liturgical ministers looking for both a practical and pastoral commentary on the liturgical celebrations of Holy Week, Triduum and the Easter Season. I would strongly recommend this book to priests, members of liturgy committees and all involved in preparing the Parish’s prayer during this, the summit of the liturgical year.”
— Mark R. Francis, CSV, associate professor of liturgy, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL
Celebrating an Authentic Passover Seder
By popular demand, a new participant’s edition has been excerpted from Stallings’ original leader’s guide for celebrating an authentic Passover seder. With the participant’s edition, guests can easily follow and participate in the seder. The author presents an authentic Jewish celebration for use in a Christian context. An easy-to-follow script works well for seders at home or at church. Follow-up with a separate agape that includes readings from the New Testament. The larger leader’s guide provides the leader with authentic recipes, directions for setting the Passover table and many other preparation tips, while the participant’s edition makes a great keepsake for your guests.
About the Author
Some years ago, Joseph M. Stallings went in search of his Christian roots — and found his Jewish ones. A student of Passover customs and traditions ever since, he celebrates Passover every year with his family and has often been involved in preparing seders for local churches. Stallings has an advanced degree in theology from the Graduate Theological Union at the University of California, Berkeley.
The Pilgrimage Way of the Cross
by Edward Hays
The twenty stations of the cross in this volume are a creative blending of traditional stations along with new ones that reflect the complete Pascal Mystery of the Risen Christ. Beginning with the First Station of Christ’s Baptism in the Jordan, along the narrow streets of Jerusalem’s Via Dolorosa, through his Crucifixion on Calvary, his Resurrection and concluding with the Twentieth Station of the Ascension, the reader is guided on a day-by-day pilgrimage experience of visiting the sites of the passion of Christ in and around the Holy City.
The Pilgrimage Way of the Cross is abundantly illustrated with 25 original pencil drawings by the author, 30 photographs and 14 detailed maps that together enhance this book’s lived experience of the ancient Holy City. For those who have never been to the Holy Land, this book provides a profoundly moving first-hand experience — and a rich reminiscence for those who have already traveled there. Pilgrimage is an excellent companion book for those preparing for baptism in RCIA and a deepening resource for every faithful disciple whom Jesus called to "Take up your cross and follow me."

The Ascent of the Mountain of God

In brief but powerful reflections for the 40 days of Lent, Father Hays has created a thought-provoking adventure, taking us on a sacred mountain climbing expedition—the mountain being a universal symbol of the presence of God, the place of awe-inspiring encounters with God. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and with each new week of Lent, we are led to another height on the way to the summit of the Easter Mystery, from Mt. Diablo through Mt. Sauvage. As his readers have come to expect, Ed Hays has woven into this manual a rich collection of parables and stories, prayers and paradoxes, for turning the challenge of the Lenten ascent into a joyful adventure. Includes a "blue ribbon" bookmark.

Holy Fools and Mad Hatters
by Edward Hays
This handbook for a hobbyhorse holiness will turn upside down your ideas about holiness and spirituality—and it's guaranteed to entertain and enlighten in the process! As playfully as a court jester, Edward Hays flips end-over-end such solemn subjects as solitude and prayer, fair play, the hunger for miracles, the conventional pursuit of piety and the very question of life and death.
Along with parables and stories that delight the soul, Holy Fools & Mad Hatters contains fourteen playfully illustrated essays with a host of innovative and effective practical exercises for inner-attainment to assist you along the pathway of a disciple. It is the Way which Jesus called "narrow," which the wisdom of the East adds is "as narrow as a razor's edge." Walking the razor's edge, as the author shows, requires the precise balance of a circus acrobat, along with the seeming vacation from reason of a Mad Hatter and the foolishness of God's great saints.
As in St. George and the Dragon, Edward Hays challenges the reader to view religion, spirituality and the quest for holiness with fresh eyes and particularly in this book with mirth, mysticism and humor. Abundant delightful artwork makes this a hard book to put down.
Lent Begins at Home

A Lenten Hobo Honeymoon
by Edward Hays
To spend Lent as a honeymoon might seem to be a contradiction in terms. Yet these forty days call us to a renewal of our romance with God.Jesus journeyed through life as a hobo, as one with "nowhere to lay his head." Lent, likewise, calls us to be hobos, to be like HOme BOound Civil War veterans, working their way back to their loved ones. That contraction (Ho-Bo) reminds us that we too are homeward bound pilgrims in this life — ho-bos who cannot rest until we rest in God, our final destination.
Hoboes have secret signs, which they write on barns and fences as coded messages to their hobo companions. A Lenten Hobo Honeymoon is filled with these hobo markings, which help point the reader along the path of a fruitful Lent, all the way to a joyous Easter. With insight, art and a touch of humor, Edward Hays guides us along a Lenten way that takes no shortcuts or easy ways out while at the same time making the way a honeymoon, a joy-filled journey with God homeward to God.
The Lenten Labyrinth
by Edward Hays
The journeys of Lent and of life are seldom straight roads, but are usually like complicated mazes or labyrinths. While we often can feel lost along the complex twisting patterns of the labyrinth path, to travel the maze of the Way is the greatest of all adventures. This guidebook of daily reflections for this journey of transformation has the power to change — to radically enrich — our way of thinking, loving and believing. Each day's reflection — which takes but a few minutes to read — is followed by brief questions/exercises aimed at inspiring personal implications.
Short of time? A few minutes daily with Father Hays can nourish a hungry soul for 24 hours. Both books of daily Lenten reflections—The Ascent of the Mountain of God and The Lenten Labyrinth—maximize our limited resources of time, making our journey through Lent into the heart of Holy Week a time of real renewal.
Literary Converts
Joseph Pearce / Paperback / Published 2000

by Edward Hays
Like most almanacs, The Old Hermit's Almanac provides interesting and uncommon information that helps us navigate through the year. Unlike most almanacs, however, this one contains information and insight that helps us navigate through every year, that helps us find our way Home.
Containing a reflection for each of the 365 days of the year (each entry approximately one page long), The Old Hermit's Almanac also celebrates holy days and holidays, feast days and famous days of the past, and glimpses into the future. It marks accomplishments of yesterday that inspire us to live well tomorrow and points out "pedestrian" prophecies of the past, off-target predictions that show the folly of forecasting, especially those predictions that limit our possibilities.
With a detailed index, it is richly illustrated and two-color throughout.
